Student Profile

We welcome non-traditional students, those who have not met success in traditional classrooms across the district and those who need more flexibility in their academics.

Many students transfer to Garfield because they have the ability and the goal to graduate high school, but they have struggled with school in the past. Some have low reading scores. Some have poor attendance records. Some have succeeded in school but are only a few credits short or graduation. Or they want to utilize our teen parent resources and on-site day care program.

Many times these academic problems are compounded by social, economic, physical or emotional problems. Our students transfer to Garfield from schools throughout the district. The process is called the School Initiated Placement (SIP).

Students can transfer voluntarily or involuntarily, through a School Initiated Council. While many students have the option to return to their comprehensive schools at the end of the semester, most of them choose to remain at Garfield because of the excellent resources and special programs we can offer them. Garfield makes a difference.
